Twyford Singers Concert
This year's Twyford Singers concert is a performance of Haydn's Stabat
Mater, to take place at 7.30pm on Saturday March 3rd in St Cross Chapel.
The Chapel has a superb acoustic and you may remember that, over the past
six years, we have successfully performed works by Handel, Mozart and Rutter
at the same venue. The Stabat Mater became Haydn's most popular sacred work, performed widely
during his lifetime. The musical expression of poetry was foremost in
Haydn's mind and this emphasis is present throughout. With its first-person
description of Mary's vast range of emotions during the Crucifixion, the
poignant text is full of opportunities for bringing feelings to life. Haydn
accomplishes this with a wide variety of musical strategies, commencing with
the tearful Stabat Mater dolorosa and culminating in the joyful Paradisi
gloria.
As in previous years, Twyford Singers will be supported by professional
orchestra and soloists (Rosie Coad soprano, Sarah Shorter alto, Daniel
Hickson tenor and Clive Hilton bass). Our conductor will be Derek Beck.
Tickets, priced at £12.50 (£7 16 and under) are available from Geoff
Settatree (712722, email: gandcsettatree@dsl.pipex.com ) and Annie Hibberd
(713630). For further details about the Twyford Singers, please see our
