Police request
Could you possibly disseminate the following report out via NHW and the web
page? It would assist me greatly and I think Mr VENN would be very
appreciative.
Mr John VENN of Silkstead Farm has asked me to pass on the following
message.
On the 10th February 2010 he found a loose dog worrying lambs on his farm,
corralling them to the extent where they were escaping from their enclosure.
Fortunately we have managed to re-unite the dog with its owner but would
like to take this opportunity to remind people if they are walking dogs near
to livestock to ensure it is under control and on a lead.
It is soon coming towards the lambing season, which is a very sensitive time
for the ewes, but unfortunately we do get reports from farmers of dogs
running free with owners refusing to control them. We also get reports of
animals being killed by dogs.
The term "worrying" can amount to no more than what owners take to be
playing by their dog, but this is sufficient for the farmer to take rather
drastic action! Fortunately "drastic" action is rarely taken unless
absolutely necessary.
I fully appreciate that the vast majority of you are more than aware of this
and are exceptionally responsible dog owners, but Mr VENN asked if I could
just pass on the message, and I am more than happy to do this to ensure the
wellbeing of both sheep and dogs!
Thank you for your time.
