People's Lottery Millions up for grabs for ITV Meridan Communities

People's Millions LogoThe People’s Millions 2010 competition has opened its doors for projects in ITV Meridian to put in their bids to receive up to £50,000 from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG). Five bumper Big Lottery Fund grants are on offer, with a total of £250,000 to be awarded to community projects in the region.

The People’s Millions, a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) and ITV, aims to improve communities across the UK and gives the public the chance to vote on which local projects should receive lottery good-cause funding.

Shortlisted projects will be showcased on local ITV evening news where they will have to convince the public why they need the cash. It will then be up to the public to vote for groups to win the funding.

More information and entry forms are available at www.peoplesmillions.org.uk. Entries need to be returned to the Big Lottery Fund by 12 noon on Friday 14 May 2010.

Your chance to walk with Sir Ian Botham

Mottisfont Abbey near Romsey, 14 April 2010 Ian 'Beefy' Botham

To celebrate 25 years of walking for charity, and to continue raising money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma research, Sir Ian ‘Beefy’ Botham will be walking through 10 towns in 10 days during April.

On 14 April, Beefy will be walking through Winchester, and he’s inviting everyone to sign-up and join him at Mottisfont Abbey near Romsey to help raise as much money as possible.

He will be starting his walk outside Marks & Spencer in Winchester High Street. From there, he will head up to Mottisfont Abbey where the public is invited to join him for a four-mile charity walk along the disused railway line.

You can sign-up for the walk at www.beefy25.com or by calling 020 7685 5143.

Get paid for generating your own energy

Solar PanelFrom April, Households and communities who install generating technologies such as small wind turbines and solar panels will entitled to claim payments for the low carbon electricity they produce.

The tariff, which is available from April 2010, will be administered by Ofgem and energy suppliers will be responsible for paying the reward to their customers. Communities who install low carbon electricity technology such as solar PV panels and wind turbines up to 5 megawatts, will be paid for the electricity they generate even if they use it themselves. The level of payment depends on the technology and is linked to inflation. A further payment would be made for any electricity they feed into the grid. These payments will be in addition to benefiting from reduced energy bills.

More information about this scheme can be found at the Energy Saving Trust website

Young people in Swanmore plan for the future

Young people in Swanmore will have the opportunity to help shape the future of their community thanks to a pilot initiative to improve young people's involvement in community planning.

Over the past few months, a group of local residents in Swanmore has been working on a Village Plan with support from the Parish Council. A draft community profile has been produced and the next stage is to undertake a detailed consultation with residents. As part of this consultation, young people will be given the chance to have their say and help shape the future of the area.

The City Council, together with Community Action Hampshire, have been working with Swanmore College to identify the issues that matter to young people. If successful, this pilot scheme could act as a template for a national drive to involve young people more in the community planning process.

To find out more about this initiative, the Swanmore Village Plan, or community planning in general, please contact Steve Lincoln, the Council's Community Planning Manager, on 01962 848110 or slincoln@winchester.gov.uk

Boing! - Winchester Bunny Hop

Easter EggsWinchester’s Easter bunny has been hiding colourful clues around the city and is inviting families to help find them to crack a puzzling code to win a treat at the City Museum.

A new addition to Winchester’s fun-packed programme of Easter activities this year, the free Winchester Bunny Hop, sponsored by The Sweet Treat Company and devised by Winchester BID and Winchester City Council, is all set to send egg-hunting families around the city hopping into Winchester’s shops to find egg-shaped clue cards, each displaying a letter.

Once you have collected all your free egg cards from 13 children-friendly shops in the city head to the City Museum to work out the simple mystery phrase. Successful riddle-solvers will be rewarded with an Easter surprise donated by The Sweet Treat Company - so get hopping while stocks last!

The Winchester Bunny Hop will run from Monday 29 March - Sunday 18 April 2010. Pick up a free quiz sheet, which includes an easy-to-use map with a numbered walking trail in the city centre, from Winchester Tourist Information Centre, the City Museum or download a copy from www.visitwinchester.co.uk.

Eat Out Get About - guide to rural pubs released

The Hampshire Tourism Partnership has launched a new publication this month designed to encourage families to eat out and get about now that the spring is on its way. The Partnership, part of the regional tourism agency Tourism South East, has produced a guide to family-friendly pubs in rural Hampshire picking out the pubs across the county which offer a real welcome for parents and children of all ages.

Divided into three sections, the guide helps you to find the perfect pub for lunch out in the countryside, by the sea or in the New Forest. Each pub has been visited to ensure that it offers basic facilities such as baby changing, a children’s menu, easy parking and access for pushchairs.

The new booklet will be available FREE from libraries and tourist information centres from the end of March, and the information can also be found on the website www.eatoutgetabout.co.uk The website will grow over the months to include new suggestions, and some seasonal alternatives such as picnic ideas with fresh ingredients from local farmers’ markets.

Over 55s Forum - giving older residents a voice

Over 55's ForumOn 25 February, residents from across the District attended a health and wellbeing event held by Winchester’s Over 55’s Forum at Winchester Discovery Centre.

The Over 55’s Forum, which is chaired by local resident John Hurcom and supported by Winchester City Council, aims to provide a voice for older people across the Winchester District. It is made up of volunteer members from neighbourhoods and communities across the whole of the District.

The event opened with a presentation by Mr Hurcom, who outlined the goals of the Over 55’s Forum. This was followed by a presentation called Rust-Proofing the Body by Dr. Derek Browne of the New Forest. There were also discussions about transport options and the role of the Forum in representing older people within the District. The event was a great success and it is hoped that it has inspired more people to join the forum.

If you’d like to get involved with the Over 55’s Forum or just want to find out more, please call 01962 848 037.

Youth of Winchester Quiz Night a big success!

Teams comprised of local students, Councillors, prospective MPs, and City Council Officers went head-to-head against each other at the recent Youth of Winchester Quiz Night at the Guildhall.

More than 60 young people from secondary schools across Winchester took part in the event which was aimed at helping young people to engage more with local democracy by spending time with those who help to influence and make decisions for the District. Teams competed by attempting rounds of questions designed to test both general knowledge and knowledge of the Winchester District. Despite a tightly fought contest, the quiz was eventually won by a team comprised of students from Swanmore Secondary School and Winchester City Council’s Chief Executive, Simon Eden.

Youth of Winchester is the District Youth Council which meets once a month to give a voice to issues effecting young people. It aims to get more young people involved with local democracy and to help improve the image of young people across the District.

If you would like to find out more about the Youth of Winchester, please contact SarahKate Abercrombie, Community Wellbeing Officer at Winchester City Council, on sabercrombie@winchester.gov.uk

Lengthsman - Survey Posted: 08 Mar 2010 07:20 AM PST
The Parish Council recently considered recruiting a "lengthsman" to maintain the common parts of the parish for actively than at present. This could involve clearing footpaths and verges, removing litter and leaves, cleaning bus shelters and signs, clearing drains and culverts, and so on – in general any light-to-medium-duty work to improve the environment. In order to gauge opinions of what extra work, if any, is needed and how valuable it would be, the following short online questionnaire is being conducted. Please can we ask that you spend a few minutes filling it in, as it will be very useful in planning future services.

Did you grow up in Hursley?

I'm an 'ancient Hursley resident', researching for an article/series of
articles about Growing Up In Hursley, using the actual words of the people
concerned. I'm passionate about Hursley and its 'oral history' - it's so important to
capture the words, they're very precious. I've already talked to some residents who've lived here all their lives and
it's fascinating to hear their stories. Schooldays, Christmas, the Village Shops, what you got up to in the school
holidays, entertainment, pranks and parties - whatever you want to tell me
about. If you'd like to help, or you know someone who might have a story to tell,
just give me a call or contact me via this web site. Many thanks in advance. Linda Hewett Telephone: 01962 775455

Re : Beat priorities

Beat priorities

PC Mark Smith just commented on the post "Beat priorities" on Hursley Village - News Archive

I don't believe that the village needs to fundraise. Speeding will be dealt but please remember it does not mean persons will respect the speed limit. When we are there it has the desired effect. Unfortunately there are always rogue drivers out there who will speed excessively! Regarding schools we do have contact and Gavin and I have been to see the village school's head to get involved. We already do this at Otterbourne and Compton school, and my colleagues at Twyford who cover Stanmore engage at Kings School.

Regarding beat surgeries our first one will be am on Sat 03/04/10. I will ensure posters and details are circulated with times. I anticipate doing surgeries every few months and moving between weekday evenings and mornings at weekends.

Help 4 Haiti event

" Help 4 Haiti"

We are organising a large fundraising event just outside Winchester in Kings Somborne Village Hall on Tuesday 16th March from 9.30am - 12.00 for disaster relief in Haiti. We are aiming to attract 200 - 300 along to the event, which is being covered by the Somborne Gauntlet, Hampshire Chronicle and Romsey advertiser amongst others. Attractions include a sale of Fabulous Cakes, Cake decorating demonstrations, a Prize Board that guarantees a prize equal or more than the amount spent on each ticket (prizes include meals for two at local restaurants, family tickets for local attractions, jewellery, beauty treatments and products and much, much more...) and a nearly new / new jewellery sale.  Teas, coffees and soft drinks will be available with plenty of seating and an (unsupervised) children's corner with toys to play with. 100% of the monies raised at the event will be donated to the registered charity shelterbox.org - a huge charity responding to disasters around the globe including Haiti (and now of course Chile) by sending out pre-packed boxes of shelter, sanitation and life support items http://www.shelterbox.org/about.php?page=9 We will be displaying detailed information about the charity and its activities on the day. We also have a donation site online at http://www.justgiving.com/hampshire4haiti for anyone who wants to support the cause but can't make it to the event - but we hope you will!!

Flashing Speed Sign Update - March 10

I attended the Hursley Parish Council meeting this Monday with the view to
obtaining an update regarding the Flashing Speed Sign that we have been
patiently waiting for Amey to install for good knows how long.

It seems that Amey had not ordered enough sockets and therefor have been
unable to install the signs. Having said that, Hursley has the necessary
poles in place, and now Amey have the appropriate sockets, we are able to go
ahead and put the sign up. It was noted at the meeting that we should have
the sign up by the end of the week! Keep em peeled!

It was also reported (and on the HVI news comments page) on the Police
Report that a small speed enforcement operation was held in the village last
week and three drivers have been "dealt with" regarding speeding in the
village. Mark and Gavin (local beat officers) will soon be speed gun
trained, so we hope they will be in a position to deal with speeders more
regularly. They do say "discretion is out of the window! If you speed you
are going to be dealt with!" Finally an initiative called "Community Speed Awareness Team" (CSAT) was
also mentioned and seemed to receive a positive response from councillors.
This scheme is in use in other areas of the country whereby, in
collaboration and training with the local police, members of the community
are trained in the use of a speed gun. Once trained and authorised the CSAT
can deploy in the village and carryout a high vis overt monitoring and
reporting function using the speed gun. Data is reported back to the police
for their action and held in archive for continued data on traffic
statistics in the village. This is seen as a very proactive approach that
villagers can take in helping to raise the speed awareness message to those
drivers that continue to speed in our village. It was agreed at the meeting
that the HPC would investigate with the local police if such a scheme could
be started here in Hursley. I will report back on this in due course.

Regards
H

School Grounds Working Party

Dear Parents and anyone else that can help,

It's officially Spring, so it's time to dust down those garden tools, stretch your legs, breath the fresh air and come and help spring clean the school grounds!

We have a School Grounds Working Party this Saturday, 6 March from 9.30 to 12.00.  Our aim is to:

  • Clear out and tidy 'The Friends' shed.
  • Replace felt on shed roof.
  • Dig over, compost and prepare the children's raised beds so they can start planting.
  • Replenish rope on the adventure playground.
  • Generally tidy up the school grounds.

Any help you are able to give would be greatly appreciated.  If you have garden forks, spades, rakes, brushes and wheelbarrows in need of exercise then please bring them too, if you can.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

If you are able to spare some time we would love to see you.

Thanks in advance for your help and as the saying goes, 'many hands make light work'!

Best wishes

Amanda

PS: Don’t forget the Quiz and Curry night this Friday in the village hall, see website for details.

Beat priorities

Dear Hursley residents,

Can I bring to your attention beat priorities?

As part of the Hampshire Policing Plan, your local Safer Neighbourhood Team based at Twyford want to engage the community of Hursley to find out what matters most where you live. What are your concerns and worries?

These will potentially become the priorities that Hursley want the police to act upon. We will then look to work with you and partner agencies for the area, and agree a way forward together to tackle them. Gavin and I want the priorities to be your choice, and we require  issues which are clearly current, relevant and impact upon your quality of life.

When priorities are agreed we are expected to give a result within a set period; some issues other villages have brought to us have been dealt with very quickly, whilst some are potentially very long term so resulting can be fluid depending on the problem. The main thing is you can have your say and hopefully see tangible results!

Some issues that get brought to us are not a policing issue, but we maybe able to point out a suitable agency to assist.

If some of the issues you raise do not become current priorities, rest assured that Gavin and I will look to address whatever is brought to our attention.

I think that this website has the potential to give us our best priorities because of the good cross section of the village whom it caters for. We sometimes have difficulties from other areas getting priorities, and what we do get can sometimes be repetitive, not current, and from a very small cross section of people i.e. Parish Councils.

There is no date by when we need a response, so please think how we can solve your issues.

Thank you for your time
